Silent Auction Catalog - Carter Center Winter Weekend 2010


President and Mrs. Carter appreciate the many gifts they have received from around the world. Since there is not enough space at The Carter Center to display all of them, a few of these items are made available through this special event to support the work of The Carter Center. Values expressed in this catalog represent certified appraisals, estimates based on sales of comparable items at previous Winter Weekend auctions, or sales of similar items from Internet sites such as eBay. Any amount paid above the stated value will be considered a donation to The Carter Center and will be tax-deductible. The minimum acceptable bid for any of these items is $50.

1. SITTING BULL BY JOSEPH BAGBY

 

Georgia artist Joseph Bagby created this print of Sioux Indian leader Sitting Bull. Bagby’s works are held in many private collections and have been featured in Life Magazine, Brown’s Guide to Georgia, and other publications. The print is displayed in a 21 x 27-inch frame.

2. CARTER TEDDY BEARS

 

Ms. Nelle Ariail, the wife of the former pastor of Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, made these two cute teddy bears. They are 11 inches tall and are made from fabric taken from clothes previously worn by President and Mrs. Carter. Both bears come with a certificate of authenticity signed by Rosalynn Carter. (Price is based on each)

3. CLAY TEA SET

 

This set of four delicately made cups and teapot were presented to President and Mrs. Carter by Winston Wang of Formosa Plastics.

The inscription on the cups is an excerpt from an ancient Chinese prayer and reads “the sons of the heaven (the emperors) have prayed to the heaven, the earth and the mountains every year since the beginning of history.” Written in 136 A.D. during the Han Dynasty, this prayer was originally carved into a stone tablet on Huashan, one of the most prestigious mountains in China.

The set was made by grand master Rao Juhua, a renowned Chinese craft artist.

4. ETHIOPIAN TIBEB SHAWL

 

Ancient weaving techniques blending silk and cotton were used to create this beautiful gold-colored shawl trimmed with bright orange and shades of brown. The shawl is 25 x 80 inches. It was made from cloth created using traditional weaving looms. The Ethiopian weavers meticulously count knots instead of using contemporary means of weaving, an art form handed down from one generation to the next.

5. DUTCH STILL-LIFE POSTER

 

During his lifetime in the 18th century, some of Jan van Huysum’s flower paintings sold for 10 times the amount of a Rembrandt. This 33 x 23-inch framed poster of his painting titled “Vase of Rich Summer Flowers” was given to President and Mrs. Carter in 1986 by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.

6. PHOTOGRAPH - JEWISH FEAST

 

Photographer Bill Aron took this 18½ x 14½-inch black-and-white photograph. The inscription reads, “In appreciation to President Jimmy Carter - Temple Beth Tikvah Men’s Club, June 14, 2000.” The artist signed this artist proof in 1992. It is presented in a 28½ x 24-inch frame.

7. NEWSPAPER FROM THE DAY PRESIDENT CARTER WAS BORN

 

A certified copy of the Philadelphia Public Ledger dated Oct. 1, 1924, is accompanied by a handwritten note from President Carter that states, “This newspaper was printed on my birthday, October 1, 1924 – Jimmy Carter.”

8. HERBERT HOOVER HUMANITARIAN AWARD

 

The Herbert Hoover Humanitarian Award is the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s most prestigious honor for individuals. President Carter received the award on Oct. 18, 2001. The award was created by mounting a flat metal plate on a blue felt background that is displayed in a bronze 19 x 24-inch frame. The plate contains two raised medallions. One shows a relief of Herbert Hoover with three young children. The other has a raised imprint reading, “Herbert Hoover Memorial Award.” Information about the reason for bestowing the award is also on the plate.

9. JIMMY CARTER WORK PROJECT AWARD

 

A group photograph of the Habitat for Humanity Work Project for Troup and Chambers counties in Georgia was given to President and Mrs. Carter on Dec. 31, 2003. The framed photograph measures 24½ x 29½ inches.

10. OFFICIAL GOVERNOR OF GEORGIA PORTRAIT

12. TABLE CLOTH AND NAPKINS

 

The first lady of Moldova, Antonina Lucinschi, gave this beautiful tablecloth to Mrs. Carter at the International Women Leaders for Mental Health Meeting in Helsinki, Finland, on July 9, 1997. The light tan-colored tablecloth has embroidered cut-out flowers along the edges outlined with shades of dark tan stitching. The tablecloth measures 95 x 65 inches and comes with 12 matching napkins. There is a slight stain on two of the napkins.

13. SILVER PLATE OF ANCIENT SHIP

 

A sterling silver plate measuring 10½ inches in diameter has been hand-decorated with the image of a fourth century Greek merchant vessel as it would have appeared when it sailed in the Mediterranean. The ship sank in the waters near Cyprus. The word “Cyprus” is inscribed at the top of the plate, and “The Kyrenia Ship” is at the bottom. It is presented on a stand. It was given to President and Mrs. Carter on July 9, 1999.

14. PHOTOGRAPH OF CARTER WAX STATUE

 

Ten Disney character trading pins surround a photograph of a wax image of President Carter in this Fourth-of-July themed offering. The photograph and pins are mounted on a red-and-white background that resembles the wavy stripes of a flag blowing in the wind. The matte is blue with white stars in each corner. The 22½ x 23½-inch artwork was presented to the Carters during a visit to Disney World in 2001. A plaque below the photograph reads, “James ‘Jimmy’ Earl Carter, Jr. Thirty-ninth President of the United States of America 1977-1981.”

15. RELIEF SCULPTURE

 

A farmer is shown riding an ox-drawn cart on this unique heavyweight plaque. The farmer, cart, and oxen are made of copper and mounted on polished stone and millboard. It measures 25½ x 13½ inches. A label on the back reads, “I declare that this is real copper handwork applied onto true fossilized stone, which is more than one million years old. Made by your well known Dutch artist Johannes Wilhelmus van Dartelen. Campinas, Brazil.”

16. SILVER SAILING SHIP

 

The Hilton Abu Dhabi Hotel in the United Arab Emirates gave this miniature ship to President and Mrs. Carter on Nov. 29, 2008. The silver ship has two sails and a movable rudder, water bucket, and anchor. It is 6 inches tall and 4½ inches long and has a silver and blue velvet display stand.

17. DUCKS UNLIMITED POSTER

 

This 28 x 18-inch poster from the Atlanta Ducks Unlimited Banquet in 1984 has been hanging in the Secret Service command post at The Carter Center for many years. It is signed by the artist Sarah Brown and is in a lovely frame measuring 27 x 38 inches.

21. SKETCH OF MOORESTOWN STATION

 

Moorestown artist Carol Mastran has signed this framed black-and-white print of a sketch of the historic Moorestown train station on Chester Avenue in Moorestown, N.J. The 15 x 18-inch print shows the station and tracks running alongside it. The brown wooden frame has a thick black stripe along each side.

22. AUTOGRAPHED COPY OF BILLY & ME

 

In 2007, Kenny Hall, former executive with American Express, published a book about his relationship with President Carter’s brother Billy. The author has written a note to the buyer in the front of the book in recognition of their support of the work of The Carter Center. 23. CARTER/MONDALE WHITE HOUSE MINIATURE PEANUT

 

This 9 x 15-inch replica of the White House has built-in peanut dispensers on either side of the columned entrance and solar panels on the roof. It comes with a mounted photograph previously displayed in The Jimmy Carter Museum. The picture is signed by President Carter and shows him and other officials with the solar panels on the roof of the White House. There is also a wall hook for display and easy access to the peanut dispensers.

24. ROSALYNN CARTER INAUGURAL GOWN DOLL

 

The Danbury Mint created this porcelain portrait doll of Rosalynn Carter as part of their America’s First Ladies Series. The 18-inch doll is dressed in a replica of the blue chiffon gown and sleeveless coat that Mrs. Carter wore to the inaugural balls. Included with the doll is a wooden display stand that has been signed by Mrs. Carter.

25. RARE HISTORY OF GEORGIA

 

Former Atlanta Constitution editor Clark Howell wrote this illustrated four-volume “History of Georgia” in 1926. The set includes over 3,000 pages; many etchings; maps; and plates in a beautifully bound and printed edition considered by many to be the definitive history of early Georgia. 26. SPOKESHAVE

 

A spokeshave is a tool used to shape and smooth wooden rods and shafts ¦¡ often for use as wheel spokes or chair legs. This 10¨ö-inch, custom-designed spokeshave was created by master chair designer and builder Russell Filbeck. It is made of cocobolo (an exotic rosewood), is waxed, and has a hand-rubbed oil finish. 27. THE OBAMA INAUGURAL MEDALLION

 

Massachusetts artist Daniel Altshuler created this bronze medallion to commemorate the Jan. 20, 2009, inauguration of President Barack Obama. The medallion, numbered 76 of 250, is embossed with the presidential seal on one side and a profile of President Obama on the other. It comes with a wooden display stand in a specially designed presentation case.

President Carter graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1947. His photograph is prominently featured on Page 176 of this Lucky Bag yearbook from his senior year at Annapolis.
