Media Advisory on Carter Center Mission to Observe the 2001 Nicaragua Elections

Managua, Nicaragua… Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will arrive in Managua on Friday, November 2 and former Costa Rica President Oscar Arias will arrive Saturday, November 3 to lead The Carter Center's election-monitoring mission to the November 4, 2001 Nicaraguan elections. The Carter Center, which observed the 1996 and 1990 presidential elections, was invited to the election by the Supreme Electoral Council (CSE) and welcomed by the political parties.

Both Presidents are members of the Center's Council of Presidents and Prime Ministers of the Americas, a group of 35 former heads of governments from the Western Hemisphere who work collaboratively to reinforce democracy and promote economic cooperation and peace among nations. Former Nicaragua President Violeta Chamarro also is a member.
