Carter Center Announces Visit to Venezuela by Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter

Caracas, Venezuela...At the invitation of the Government of Venezuela, a five-member delegation of The Carter Center has completed an assessment mission to the country to evaluate the conditions for a dialogue process in the current climate of uncertainty. After holding meetings with Venezuelans representing key sectors of society and branches of government, as well as the Vice President and President, the delegation has been impressed by the deep commitment to democracy and strong support among Venezuelans for a peaceful resolution to the divisions within the country.

The delegation determined that there is a desire for concrete negotiations with an agenda agreed to by the main actors, timetables to address urgent issues, methods of verification, and broad international support.

Based on this assessment and the agreement of the major actors to meet with him, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will visit Venezuela July 6-10 to work toward these goals.
