The Carter Center Joins Panama in Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Panama Canal Treaties

ATLANTA — The Carter Center joins Panama in celebrating the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Torrijos-Carter Treaties. The signing of the Panama Canal Treaties on Sept. 7, 1977, marked an historic moment for Panama and the hemisphere, representing a chance to establish a new pattern of relations based on mutual respect among the countries in the region.

“Our failure to act on the treaty was driving a wedge between us and some of our best friends and allies among the other American nations. They were being forced to take sides between us and Panama, and they were not supporting us,” reflected former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. “Nevertheless, I believed a new treaty was absolutely necessary. I was convinced that we needed to correct an injustice.”

Reflecting on the negotiations, President Carter said of General Omar Torrijos: “I learned to respect his political courage and honesty and to consider him as a personal friend.”

As a result of these treaties, Panama assumed full control of the operations of the Panama Canal on Dec. 31, 1999, and has proceeded with an expansion of the canal that serves global commerce and connectivity.

ATLANTA — El Centro Carter se une a Panamá en la celebración del 40 aniversario de la firma de los Tratados Torrijos-Carter. La firma de los Tratados del Canal de Panamá el 7 de septiembre de 1977 marcó un momento histórico para Panamá y el hemisferio, representando una oportunidad para establecer un nuevo patrón de relaciones basadas en el respeto mutuo entre los países de la región.

"Nuestra falta de acción en relación al tratado estaba ocasionando una brecha entre nosotros y algunos de nuestros mejores amigos y aliados entre las otras naciones americanas.
