  • Research interns work directly with the Research Director on a wide range of projects, including the support of President Carter’s scholarly pursuits and upcoming publications.


The Research Department supports President Carter and The Carter Center on delving into such broad subjects as the environment, religion, government, politics, and history for upcoming projects or publications. The Research intern will work directly with the Research Director on a wide range of topics, with projects varying considerably depending on what President Carter and The Carter Center are pursuing at the time of internship. Past projects of the Research Department have included studying the Arab-Israeli conflict or examining the relationship between religion and ecology.

The Research Intern maintains a special focus in assisting President Carter with his scholarly activities and his upcoming publications, including future books and academic relationships. Qualified interns should have strong writing and research skills, in addition to an interest in history, government, and international affairs.

A typical work week is 20 hours.

Typical Projects

  • Proofread manuscripts for publication
  • Compile and annotate bibliographies
  • Conduct research for current projects of President Carter and/or The Carter Center
  • Research projects vary considerably, with past projects including research on:
  • Best practices in economic development
  • Provisions for disability in presidents of the United States
  • The Arab-Israeli conflict
  • The relationship between religion and ecology
