Where is schistosomiasis found?

Schistosomiasis can be found in some 74 tropical countries in Africa, the Caribbean, eastern South America, east Asia, and in the Middle East. An estimated 200 million people are infected with the disease; half are in Africa. The Carter Center works to control the disease in three states in Nigeria — Plateau, Nasarawa, and Delta. There are two forms of schistosomiasis in Nigeria and a number of other African countries: Schistosoma haematobium (urinary schistosomiasis) and Schistosoma mansoni (intestinal schistosomiasis).
